United come from behind to beat Sporting Lisbon

Former Sporting star Cristiano Ronaldo scored the second winner in as many matches against his old club to knock the Portuguese team out of this season’s Champions League and maintain Manchester United’s hundred percent record in the competition. There was some consolation for Sporting Lisbon though as they would now compete in Europe’s second-tier competition, the UEFA Cup. But it was clearly Ronaldo’s night. The mercurial Portuguese winger struck a brilliant stoppage-time winner via a 30-yard free-kick apart from his overall influence in the game. Ronaldo’s stellar performance underlines the fact how the English champions are helped by their number eight’s influence. The Red Devils crashed to a 1-0 loss at Bolton on saturday simply because the Portuguese was rested and the team lacked the tooth in attack without him. But Lisbon coach Paulo Bento was upset with the fact that his boys sqandered late goals to surrender crucial points in the last two games. The former Portuguese international player was not helped by a dubious decision to rule Liedson’s strike offside in the first-half. But the Lisbon coach was gracious in the defeat and suggested United’s superior quality upfront in the second-half with the introduction of Carlos Tevez and Ronaldo’s skills and pace costing his team all three points. In the group’s other game Roma crushed Dynamo Kiev 4-1 courtesy of a double from Montenegrin striker Mirko Vucinic. In tuesday’s other champions league matches, an under-strength Arsenal side lost its 28-match unbeaten streak when the Londoners were handsomely beaten by Sevilla 3-1 in a stormy encounter marred with the sending off of manager Arsene Wenger by the referee. Rangers need a point against Lyon in the last match to qualify for the second round despite going down 2-3 to Stuttgart in Germany. In the other match of the group Barcelona and Lyon shared the points in a 2-2 draw which sends the Spanish giants into the second round. Inter Milan hammered Turkish side Fenerbahce 3-0 providing qualification hopes to PSV Eindhoven who beat CSKA Moscow by a solitary Jefferson Farfan goal in freezing temperatures.
