Italy reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup after scripting a thrilling 1-0 victory over Australia in the second round match at Kaiserslautern.





The match was at its dramatist stage when both sides scored no goals playing 89 minutes and heading towards shootout. Then the substitute Francesco Totti kicked the ball high to the goalkeeper’s right to get a match-winning goal in the 90th minute.



Italy would have won the match 2-0 if Luca Toni had converted any of the chances he got through out the match. However, Australia narrowly escaped the hurdles.



Italy reduced to 10-man squad when the striker Marco Materzzi left the ground after getting the red card. However, it could not bring down team’s confidence.



Italy will take on Ukraine in the quarterfinals.
