Melbourne Victory bolstered its midfield by roping in Costa Rican World Cupper Carlos Hernandez, who will join the side early next month.
Victory borrowed the star midfielder from Costa Rican club LD Alajuelense on a two-year loan and they also have the option to buy the 25-year-old player.
Though Hernandez, nicknamed El Zorro or “the Fox”, would not play Victory’s July 4 match against China in Hong Kong, he would offer his service for A-League’s pre-season cup.
Hernandez’s technical superiority and ability to unleash power-packed shots that can unnerve any defence makes him an asset for any team and the Victory officials are hoping that the Costa Rican would prove a perfect replacement for Brazilian Fred.
Club’s football operations manager Gary Cole believes Hernandez would join Archie Thompson and Daniel Allsopp to form a deadly three-pronged attack.
He said
We are over the moon to get him. He’s obviously a top player - he played in the last World Cup and that puts it all into perspective.
