everton vs metalist

Appearing on their way out of the competition, Everton finally puts an end to a series of European disappointments, to overpower an impressive Metalist Kharkiv side and claim their place in the group stage of the Uefa Cup.

Everton’s last foray into Europe two years ago ended in double disappointment when they made early exits in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup, but a win here wipes out past awful memories.

Metalist, reclining fourth in the Ukraine league were backed by an estimated 30,000 passionate fans and dominated proceedings and took a deserved lead.

The home fans provided an electric atmosphere from the kick-off, with every Metalist attack greeted by a deafening crescendo of cheers.

Everton showing their battling qualities led by Joleon Lescott, equalised with his fifth goal of the season, early in the second half as Metalist restored their lead within four minutes.

However, it was McFadden who struck with 18 minutes left to give Everton the advantage but finally the pick of the day, was an inspired substitution in the form of Victor Anichebe who enabled the team to ride its fortune win, that came just two minutes before the final whistle.

The outcome was desperately harsh on the Ukraine side, who had controlled so much of the game to come out of it with no reward. All of a sudden, the entire vociferous throng was left to a stun of silence.
