When the opposition boasts of players of class of Adriano, Kanoute, Fabiano & Crespo it is a huge gamble to be resting your big guns as you take them on. Arsenal is probably the most under-rated football side among the top 4 of the EPL but even their natural flair & fabulous one-touch football failed to make a mark against the very dangerous Seville side. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger rested his key men, William Gallas, whose absence was surely felt on the turf. Arsenal slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Seville & was defeated for the first time in Europe since the last 7 months. The game started with the usual flow from Arsenal as they tried to weave their way past the tight Seville defense. While Arsenal seems to play some magical football on one night, they look equally mediocre on the other. It seems that Wenger’s boys do not really enjoy a very physical style of game & are easily contained once the opposition starts playing tough & rough styled football. For the Arsenal team the game is truly beautiful & they seem to consider that it is more of an art work than a contest. While on their night Arsenal can be devastating by blasting their way through any opposition with eloquent ease, on this night it was the Spanish club that looked the classier team as the not only played a very physical game but also played a beautiful passing game that frustrated the Arsenal manager immensely. The visitors started well with Eduardo’s opening strike in the 11th minute. But very soon it all fell apart for them as the home team capitalized on a mistake made by Philippe Senderos to score their first goal. Soon Fabiano netted in the second & before the final whistle could give some relief to a fuming Wenger, Kanoute very coolly slid one in from the penalty spot with immaculate ease. As the contest on the pitch was heating up, Arsene was fuming on the touchline in the technical area. He was upset with the officiating of controversial referee Eric Braamhaar & even after being expelled from the technical area hung around to see the last few painful minutes of the match. He later went on to describe the behavior of the referee as ‘shocking’ & said that he had never seen such a fourth official in his entire Champions league career as a coach, which nearly spanned over 400 games. All in all, it was a very forgettable day for the Gunners & their boss. Wenger justified his selection of squad by stating the busy December his team had to gear up for & the fact that qualification was more important than any unbeaten-run record. While the defeat might upset a few, if Arsenal has a wonderful next month & if the Gunners do manage to stay on top of the Premier League by New Year, then probably no one will complain. Source
