cristiano-ronaldo_58 With a comprehensive 3-1 win against Wigan, at the Old Trafford, Manchester United extended their lead to four points at the top of the English Premiership League.

It is a golden run for Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored twice in the successive matches to take the United home safe and sound. Ronaldo hardly took a minute to score the first goal when he was replaced for Darren Fletcher at the beginning of the second-half. He guided the Paul Scholes corner into the net with a strong and well directed header and four minutes later converted the penalty into a goal, when Park Ji-Sung was brought down in the penalty area, to secure a 2-0 lead for the United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the third goal just before Wigan’s Leighton Baines scored the lone goal for his side from a penalty.

Though, the United claimed a comprehensive win, Sir Alex Ferguson, United manager didn’t get carried away with the situation and said after the encounter,

There will be some difficult days ahead. But after the West Ham result (where United lost 1-0 earlier this month) we’ve shown we can bounce back.

Both of us (United and Chelsea) will drop points.

On the other, arch and title rivals Chelsea lost the way against Reading at home turf and could only manage a 2-2 draw, whereas, Liverpool went badly down from third to the sixth place following the 1-0 beating by Blackburn, owing to the lone goal of the South African striker Benni McCarthy.

Double strike from in-form striker Didier Drogba helped Chelsea to earn a draw. Expressing the content over the result, Jose Mourinho, Chelsea coach asserted after the match,

That was a fair result.

When the opponents do well and create problems, you can’t complain, only praise the opposition.

Arsenal moved to the third places with a 2-1 away win, as they overcame poor Watford who is lying at the bottom of the table. Claiming a 2-1 home win against Newcastle, Bolton mounted to the fourth position.

Portsmouth
carried on with their European hopes as they beat West Ham 2-1 in an away encounter to jump to the fifth place in the League table.

There wasn’t much transformation in Aston Villa’s bleak spell, for they once again went down 2-1 in their away encounter with Tottenham, whilst Manchester City secured a 1-0 win, with Stephen Ireland’s first goal for the club, over Sheffield United.
