The New UEFA president at the UEFA congress - An implausible talent when on field, a fitting replacement for Lennart Johansson, a preferred selection with expectation of leading UEFA to glory - how far justified?
Michel Platini elected for the spot - and as early has come under criticism for his proposal. Platini has proposed to reduce the number of teams competing in the Champions League form four to three from the major football playing nations viz. Spain, Italy and England.
Platini quoted,
“The new format of the Champions League is for 2009. I talked about finding a better equilibrium for the number of clubs and that’s for 2009-10. The final decision will be [by UEFA’s executive committee] in April so we have a few months still to see which way we will go, but I would like a better equilibrium.”
This plan is to be presented in April this year and is scheduled to commence from the 2009-2010 season - However, the proposal has met criticisms from Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson, who has advised Platini to refrain from any rescheduling in the League.
Ferguson has warned Platini to leave the format of the UEFA Champions League unaltered - Platini independently can make no such decision and it will take a lot for him to put across his motive to the UEFA’s executive committee, in consultation to whom the whole thing will be finalized.
I think in the interest of the League what’s important is, better teams playing best in Europe - that is what’s been the charm of the Champions League by reducing sides the competition may lose its charisma.
