The clouds of corruption hovering over Football, the most popular of games seem unending. Illegal payments in transfer deals have become so common. Police recently, conducted raids on the trio Premier League clubs Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers with a suspicion of their involvement in some way or the other. A City of London police spokesman said: We can confirm that search warrants were served at three football clubs and the homes of two individuals in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders. This investigation is a totally independent inquiry. It has not been influenced or informed by the Quest inquiry in any way. As this is a live investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage. An ongoing investigation led by Lord Stevens and his Quest team looked into 362 transfer deals which includes payments by clubs directly to third parties and failure to disclose payments being made. All such deals are considered non-offensive as it may or may not lead to fines or punishment from the football authorities. The 17 suspicious transfers, which could result in criminal prosecutions, may lead to proceedings against Premiership directors, scouts or managers. A Premier League statement said: In regard to the 17 outstanding transfers, Quest, working in conjunction with and full co-operation of the FA, has made significant progress and will continue their investigations reporting as and when they reach a more definitive position on these transactions.
