Pereiro receives coveted yellow jersey finally

Spain’s Oscar Pereiro received the yellow jersey from the 2006 Tour de France at a ceremony in Madrid. Tour director Christian Prudhomme awarded him the jersey after US rider Floyd Landis was stripped of this title for doping. Pereiro, who finished 57 seconds behind Landis in the final standings, said that it was an emotional moment for him – a day that he will never forget. The International Cycling Union, however, formally declared Pereiro the winner on September 21 after Landis was found using synthetic testosterone during the Tour. Pereiro added: I feel very sorry for him. I can’t celebrate what happened but in sports there are rules that must be respected. Never before in the history of the race has a winner has been stripped of the title. Landis, meanwhile, has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland. It is expected to issue a final ruling in February. Image: cyclingrevealed
