Coventry that plays the second-division Championship had a man, Michael Mifsud scoring two goals to beat the defending Premier League champions, at Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium. Ferguson making entire changes to the team from Sunday’s win against Chelsea has certainly paid the price.
Despite changes, the team nevertheless comprised six full-fledged internationals, that provided a major embarrassment. Nani, the £17m summer buy from Sporting Lisbon, is yet to show any first-class job for the club.
Upset over the defeat, United boss Ferguson said,
I’m flabbergasted by our performance. It is a big shock for us all. These are young players that we have shown great hope for and trumpeted them in a loud way.
An amazing turn-out, backed by 11,000 fans saw their hero going ahead for the opener in the 27th minute as he converted Michael Doyle’s cross into the goal post. The lead mid-way through the first half ran United the changes, but the policy proved a backfire.
Mifsud again put the game beyond United’s reach and doubled his tally by striking a good shot with 20 minutes remaining to the game.
It’s perhaps for the second successive season, United have bowed out of the Carling Cup but, the defeat may not have been as humbling as the one suffered against Southend United, when it was a much stronger team.
A sheer good game for Coventry, that became the first lower league club to win at Old Trafford since York City in 1995.
