
Presently playing defensive midfield for Chelsea in the English Premiership the veteran, Claude Makelele signs a one-year contract extension, with previous deal set to expire at the end of this season.
Marking a successful career with both club and country, the French international has accomplished more than 170 appearances for Chelsea. Meanwhile at the international arena gained 33 caps by the end of 2004 and also participated at the 1996 Olympic Games, the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2004.
Transferred from Real Madrid to Chelsea in 2003, from whereon he has never looked back and has been an integral member in Chelsea’s success. Striking in the second season with the club, he won the Premier League and League Cup. Later, he went on to grab both the trophies again and the 2007 FA Cup as well.
Despite having retired from the international’s in 2004 with a sole intention to focus on club football, Makelele agreed to return for France along with compatriots Zinedine Zidane and Lilian Thuramas. At the 2006 World Cup, Makelele’s performance at the knockouts was awesome as a tireless midfielder, with France progressing to the grand finale but eventually declining against Italy, on the basis of penalty shootouts.
