It probably is an unfair comment to make when you say that Liverpool are the least exciting club to watch among all the three major clubs that dawn the red in English football. Last night was surely not the time to make such a comment as Benitez’s boys virtually left a trail of seething hot flames as they destroyed and ripped open the defense of a hapless Marseille at the Stade Velodrome. Liverpool made their way in to the knockout stages of the Champions League in some style by banging in 4 goals to make sure that they and their beloved boss Rafa were saved from an embarrassing early exit from Europe’s elite soccer fest. Liverpool started the night looking determined to make a statement. Steven Gerrard is considered one of the best leaders of men on a football turf and off of it in the locker room. Surely the other Liverpool boys got an ear full from their inspirational skipper as they started the game in some style. It was in the first two minutes of the game that Steven Gerrard got caught in the penalty area and soon was on the ball to take the shot. He might have slightly miscued it the first time, but the Marseille goal keeper was heart broken when the Liverpool skipper put the rebound back in to the net. Rafa, who has been under great scrutiny, to see the least, from the club’s owners for his various moves including the bringing of Torres, must have been delighted about the way the young Spaniard thanked his boss on the all important night. The brilliant young Torres not only set up the first for Gerrard, but also scored the second a few minutes later. Fernando went past two defenders and produced a wonderfully sublime finish; all going on to show that Rafa’s investment was paying off. Torres was in full flight by now and this was his 12th goal for the club in 19 appearances. While the first 11 minutes almost sealed the match for the Reds, the early goal in the second half from Kuyt most definitely put the game past the hosts, who looked miserable out there. Marseille looked like a spent force and an inexperienced lot as their defense was shredded to pieces with some incisive passing and of course a brilliant Torres who not only chose to repay the faith shown in him by Rafa but also picked the night to show off his class. Babel put the icing on the cake by netting one in on the 90th minute mark to seal off a great night for the Liverpool faithful. Rafa must have been a very relieved man, as a disastrous beginning seems now to be only a mere shadow in distant past. Last night saw Liverpool at their glorious best, even if it is against Marseille, a club struggling to win matches in its domestic league. The true test will soon come in the form of the ‘Red Devils’, but if they can continue this class of football, it might take plenty to stop them Source
