Liverpool remains in Euro with Torres’ goal

Rafa Benitez heaved a sigh of relief after Liverpool beat Porto for 4-1. The Spanish manager seemed to have saved his job. It was however not easy for Liverpool in the beginning when the team was being threatened with elimination from the Champions League that would have seen Benitez, the man who has been guiding the team for more than three years fired from the lucrative job. A 19-th minute goal from Fernando Torres seemed to have made Liverpool’s task of qualifying to the knockout stages of the competition easy especially after news from Istanbul came that Besiktas had taken the lead against Marseille. Porto soon managed to equalize. While a draw with Porto seemed to be enough to take Liverpool to the knockout stages, news once again poured in from Istanbul that Marseille pulled level with the Turks, upsetting Benitez’s plan. Eventually the Turks emerged the winner but the Liverpool manager had already learnt his lesson of not relying on the opposition for a favour. Fortunately, Torres scored a second goal in the 78th minute and Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch added goals in the 84th and 88th minutes of the match, giving their boss a reprieve. Liverpool now remains in the competition. Source:daily mail Image:liverpoolfc
