The doyen of world soccer finds himself in hospital once again. The great Argentinean legend, Diego Maradona was taken to a Buenos Aires hospital in an ambulance on Wednesday after falling ill and was undergoing tests.
For a long time now, Maradona has been related to drug addiction, particularly cocaine. In 2000, Maradona was hospitalized with a severe heart problem while vacationing in Uruguay and tested positive for cocaine before undergoing drug rehabilitation in Cuba. He underwent a stomach-stapling operation in 2005, shedding around 30 kgs (66 lbs).
But, this time, the reason for his hospitalization, though, not clear, is being related to his gaining more weight. Maradona is likely to remain hospitalized for several days.
The Argentinean soccer legend, even during his playing career was related to drugs and was suspended for the same while playing in Italy in 1991 and kicked out of the 1994 World Cup in the United States after failing a drug test. Though, he refuted the charges. Since his retirement in 1997, he has played in several promotional soccer games with other retired players from across Latin America. Recent times have seen him host a television show.
No doubt, Maradona has been a legend for sports lovers, particularly soccer. But, players must understand their role in their teams as representatives of their country and not take to drugs for enhancing their performance. People love them for their natural performance that comes through hard work and not through stimulants.
