avram grant behind takes over from jose mourinho sitting

It’s not an easy task to fill the void created by the exit of Jose Mourinho, arguably the most charismatic and maverick manager in English football, but Avram Grant, Chelsea’s director of football till the other day, gets a chance to prove his mettle as he takes up the job.

Grant, an Israeli, will have Steve Clarke to assists him and Chelsea management oozed confidence that the duo would prove successful.

They issued a statement saying

The club is delighted that in Avram we have an experienced man who can come in at a difficult time.

In Steve we have a Chelsea man and he will be a crucial part of the management team going forward. Avram and Steve have our full confidence and support.

Chelsea’s Russian owner Roman Abramovich, whose souring relation with Mourinho resulted in the latter’s exit, joined Grant and Clarke, who attended what was their first training session.

Grant’s appointment has already polarized opinions with former England coach and Manchester city boss Sven-Goran Eriksson reposing faith in his ability even though people like former Chelsea player Pat Nevin think it’s just a short-gap arrangement.
