geovanniManchester City’s midfield now sports a formidable look after the club signed Brazilian Geovanni on a free transfer.

Manchester City will hope that the 27-year-old international, who joins the club on a one-year deal from Cruzeiro, would mastermind a change in the club’s fortune. Geovanni has played for Barcelona and Benfica in the Champions League and has been training with Portsmouth of late before Manchester City roped him in.

Thrilled to get the opportunity to showcase his skills to the English crowd, Geovanni said

It’s been a dream for me to play in England, and this is a dream as well to come to a club like Manchester City.

It’s great to be here after playing in Europe for a few years already, and I can’t wait to get started. Playing in England has been an ambition of mine, I watched a lot of Premier League games when I was at Benfica and now that I’m here I just want to start playing.

The Cruzeiro player moved to Barcelona in 2001 but after a poor stint there, Geovanni was sent on loan to Benfica, where the midfielder excelled. In fact it was his goal which showed the door to Manchester United in the 2005 Champions League.

Earlier, Manchester City’s new manager and former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson had signed Rolando Bianchi and Gelson Fernandes.
