The Technical Study Group of FIFA says that a total number of 147 goals were scored in the 64 matches at an average of 2.30 goals per match while in the previous world cup it was 161 goals averaging 2.52 goals per match. The report also claims that most of the teams played their matches with defensive strategy.

28 out of 32 teams adopted a four-man defense strategy and three of the semi-finalists played with just one natural forward. France with Henry, Portugal with Pauleta and Italy with Tony, were leading forward players, the report says.

Italy and France had adopted defensive strategy throughout the tournament. Italy had not conceded any goal form its opponents (final match is exceptional case), while France had conceded just two goals.

FIFA World Cup 2006 led us to conclude that ‘Defense is the best form of attack’.
