The last time England hosted the FIFA World Cup finals, they won it in style. So there’s little doubt that England is eager to host the mostly widely watched single sports event again as early as 2018. The English FA had hatched the plan to bid for the World Cup 2018 long back and they have been boosted by a recent FIFA decision to drop its policy of rotating the World Cups among continents for good.

England is a sports mad country and the main sport is football. Football is embedded deep inside the English culture and the national team is the main outlet of expression for the nation’s people. Not only are the people in favour of hosting yet another majot sports event, the British government too backs up the proposal.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has openly expressed his desire and support for England to host the mega sports event in 2018, irrespective od the cost factor. There are many who observe the 2012 Olympics to be held in London as financially damaging to the country’ economy but the government is unfazed by the idea of another expensive sports event in the nation.

FIFA’s decided to do way with the rotation policy when it realized that the continents were decideing internally which country they would put forward as the host candiadate. The decision to terminate the principle has opened the window of opportunity for a number of European nations.

The Netherlands would provide the toughest challenge to England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup although the likes of Belgium and Luxembourg, who too have thrown their hat into the pot, wouldn’t be too convincing. The Spanish Federation too has expressed its desire to host the competition in 2018.
