Sunderland legend Ian Porterfield who kept on battling with colon cancer is finally laid to rest in peace at the young age of 61. A football man all his life and a wonderful human being, he gained respect amongst football fans worldwide. His exploit for kicking the winning goal for Second Division Sunderland in the 1973 FA Cup final against Leeds United will never be forgotten. The result went down as one of the biggest upset in FA Cup history as Leeds were one of the dominant teams of the age while Sunderland were ranked outside the top-flight.
With a scintillating coaching career guided Armenia to a spectacular 1-1 draw against Portugal just three weeks ago. Armenia was the sixth national team he had coached after Zambia, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, Oman, Trinidad and Tobago. His highest-profile position in England came in the early 1990s when he took charge of club Chelsea. His international sojourn also included a spell with Busan I’Park, the South Korean club side, where he enjoyed remarkable success.
Impressing through a comprehensive and a successful vocation in football spanning five decades both as a player and a coach, I bid adieu to Sunderland’s greatest sensation.
