andrew johnson right being consoled by a teammate

Squandering two penalties is a luxury which no team can afford in contemporary soccer but Andrew Johnson did just that and Everton was held to a 1-1 draw by Metalist Kharkiv in the Uefa Cup.

It was a gritty show by the Metalist, considering they were reduced to nine men towards the end with Seweryn Gancarczyk and Olexandr Babych given the marching order for violent fouls.

Though Everton dominated the game, Metalist, the Ukrainian side, almost took the lead
when Serhiy Valyayev’s 30-yard shot was parried away by Stefan Wessels.

Joleon Lescott finally ended the deadlock when he leapt to nod home a corner from the right.

Everton could have extended the lead when they got penalty after a foul on Lescott. Johnson scored but referee asked him to re-tale the shot and this time his attempt was blocked.

Metalist then scored the equalizer when Venans Zeze found the net after he was fed by Hitcham Mahdoufi.

With a minute left, Everton got another penalty and this time too, Johnson missed as his powerful strike went over the bar.
