Entrusted a job at Chelsea on a long-term basis and losing to the United set a shaky start for Grant but for now, the weeks long beleaguered manager seem to ease up after clubs recent success with a 4-0 win over Hull.
The Carling Cup, of which Chelsea are the holders was infact the first trophy won by Chelsea’s previous boss and victories hereafter appeared a routine work for him. Grant, most likely would not mind reaching it.
Continual in control of the third round encounter, Chelsea appeared dangerous from a succession of early corners. Grant making seven changes from the team that lost to United got straight into their stride, forcing five corners inside the opening four minutes.
The 37th minute saw Sinclair striking a low drive opener, to seal his first goal for the club. Just after half-time, it was Salomon Kalou who headed home the second before Steve Sidwell’s well-struck drive soon made it 3-0.
Later, some good work by substitute Joe Cole landed Kalou completing his second goal of the match landing a convincing win for Chelsea.
Wayne Bridge coming as a substitute in the last match seems a big boost for Grant who sees players returning from injuries as Lampard, Ballack and couple other players have given positive signs of recovery.
