Frank Lampard’s future with Chelsea has been under the scanner ever since Italian giants Juventus and Spanish champions Real Madrid approached the influential England midfielder at the fag end of the last season. Now with the influential Jose Mourinho gone, there is every chance that one of the Portuguese manager’s favourite players could head for the Stamford Bridge exit door too.
With Lampard’s current contract expiring in 18 months time, there is no sign of any new contract negotiation between the two parties and the Chelsea fans can certainly fear the worst.
Things have greatly changed since the departure of Jose Mourinho earlier this season and many top Chelsea players, notably striker Didier Drogba, have made their intentions clear of leaving the club at the first instance although the Ivorian striker publicly denies it and has been instrumental in the London club’s recent good form.
According to many sports pundits, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich likes to run the club in his own way and that is where lies the problem. Jose Mourinho and Roman Abramovich did not agree on many critical issues, including player transfers, and the former had to leave the club.
Similarly, Frank Lampard is a big name in English and European football and is hungry for success, but many feel that the current Chelsea boss Avram Grant does not have the same charisma and skills to lead the two-time English champions to any sort of silverware this season.
Lampard’s season so far has been plagued with injuries but he has shown his value to the club on his swift return by inspiring Chelsea to a 6-0 hammering of Sven Goran Ericsson’s high-flying Man City on saturday and again striking a hat-trick(including the winning goal)last night against a brave Leicester City side to take the Blues into the quarter-final of the Carling Cup.
Although, undoubtedly, Chelsea would give their hearts out in persuading the inspirational midfielder to stay at the Bridge, many feel that winning titles(preferably, the Champions League) is the only way of keeping Frank Lampard in the south-west of London.
