With two Latin American giants in the summit showdown, the Copa America final promised to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller. But in the end, Brazil virtually toyed with Argentina and made it an incredibly one-sided affair by thrashing their arch-rivals 3-0 to win the title. Brazil unleashed waves of attacks which crashed on the Argentine defence and the game was into its fourth minute when the Argentine citadel crumbled as Brazil’s Arsenal striker Julio Baptista rifled a shot into the goal beating Argentina custodian Roberto Abbondanzieri all ends up. Argentina added to its woes just five minutes before the lemon break when their defender Roberto Ayala deflected Daniel Alves’ cross that entered his own goal. Alves came to haunt the Argentine again in the 69th minute when he capped Brazil’s rapier-sharp counter-attack with a smart goal that put paid to all Argentine hopes. Coached by its World Cup winning former captain Dunga, Brazil thus bagged its eighth Copa America title, while Argentina fell just one hurdle short of a record 15th triumph. The win is all the more special for Brazil, who left out star players Ronaldinho and Kaka in the tournament. Image:
