
Brazil, repeating the same fete with a penalty shootout win over the same opponents, at the same stage of the previous tournament three years ago, has indeed been a remarkable spectacle for all football lovers.
The defending Copa America champions, have again made it to the Copa America finals eliminating Uruguay 5-4, in the semis, on the basis of penalty shoot-outs.
Brazil’s full-back Maicon gained an early lead before the match was halted for almost fourteen minutes following floodlights negligence. However, later Uruguay took the initiative as Forlan, scored the equalizer. Five minutes later Julio Baptista restored Brazil’s lead again.
Brazil sensing a place in the final got a jolt as Uruguay pulled level again in the 70th minute through a substitute.
But neither side could conjure up a breakthrough and the match finished with both teams tied at 2-2 after regulation.
To finish, Gilberto edged to put Brazil in front on 5-4 in penalty shoot-outs and goal-keeper Doni made Uruguayan players to a standstill by blocking Diego Lugano’s shot.
Brazil advances to meet the winner of tonight’s semifinal between Mexico and Argentina. The decider will be played at Maracaibo on July the 15th.
