Bayern, champions for the last two seasons at last failed to make the third consecutive win in the cup this time. However, they were earlier defeated by Aachen in the quarterfinal match back in February 2004 by 2-1.
Bayern manager Felix Magath sent German Under-21 Michael Rensing in for Oliver Kahn to the goal, as he felt that the youngster would benefit from experience. However, he failed to save the defeat, as he had to pick the ball three times in the first half.
