david beckham in his unofficial galaxy debut against chelsea

Los Angeles Galaxy fans, dying to see the club’s star import David Beckham in SuperLiga, may have to wait a little more. Nursing an ankle injury, Beckham might skip the opening tie against Mexican League champion Pachuca. And even if he risks his injury and insists on playing, it would be merely as a substitute.

Beckham attended Major League Soccer (MLS) all-star game last week and also played for about 16 minutes in the match which Galaxy lost 0-1 to English giant Chelsea. But owing to the injury, the former England captain did not attend yesterday’s practice and was also absent in the SuperLiga press conference in Hollywood.

Galaxy coach Frank Yallop made it clear that the club won’t rush Beckham. He said

We don’t want to make it (ankle injury) worse and he’s still a little bit sore. We are forever hopeful he can be back in a uniform and running out for us as soon as he can, (be it) next weekend or the following Tuesday.

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber too justified Beckham’s decision to skip the press conference and said

We cannot keep running him around, dragging him to press conferences and events. We just want him to get better.

He is a very professional guy. He is not going to do anything that he does not think is going to support his ability to get better.

Apart from Galaxy, the SuperLiga includes three other MLS sides — D.C. United, FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo) apart from four Mexican teams — Chivas, Club America, Morelia and Pachuca.
