Soccer was yet to recover from Sevilla player Antonio Puerta’s death before another death tragedy hit the game and this time it was 27-year-old Zambian striker Chaswe Nsofwa who died after collapsing during a practice game.
The youngster, who represented Hapoel Beer Sheva, a second division club in Israel, collapsed in the field and his teammates did their best to restore his consciousness. He was soon rushed to the Beer Sheva’s Soroka Hospital where the forward was pronounced dead.
Carmel Cohen, an ambulance worker with the Magen David Adom (MDA), told Israel Radio
We found the player lying on the ground unconscious as his friends tried to help him. He was in a state of clinical death.
It was a tragic end to promising Nsofwa who played in the African Cup of Nations squad in 2002 and was in great form for his club.
Earlier on Sunday, Sevilla’s Spanish recruit Antonio Puerta collapsed during the match because of a heart attack and eventually died on Tuesday.
Incidentally, Leicester City player Clive Clarke too sent panic when he collapsed on Sunday. The defender was soon hospitalized even though he has been declared out of danger later.
